Playing Craps
Craps is a table game played with two dice. The objective is to predict the outcome of rolling the dice. Whether a bet wins, loses, or draws depends on the sum of the dice and placement of the wager.
Basic Gameplay
Craps groups a series of dice rolls into rounds. The first roll of a round is called the Come-out roll. If the sum of the dice on the Come-out roll totals 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12, the round is over.
Any other total ( 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 ) becomes the Point. The round continues, with optional betting before each roll, until the Point is re-thrown or a 7 is rolled.
When playing Craps in a casino, each round is controlled by a Shooter. The Shooter is a player who bets the Pass Line and rolls the dice for the duration of the round. As there is only
one player in the online version of Craps, this restriction has been removed.
Crap Terms
It is helpful to understand some basic Crap terminology when reading the rules.
-
7
-
The number 7 is important in Craps because it has the highest probability of being thrown.
-
Craps
-
Term for rolling a 2, 3, or 12 on the Come-out roll.
-
Come-out roll
-
The first roll of a round. If the dice total 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 on the Come-out roll, the round is over. Otherwise, the total becomes the Point. The Come-out roll is also special in that certain bets can only be placed during it ( Don't Pass bet ), while others cannot ( Come, Don't Come, Buy, Place Win, and Odds ).
-
Point
-
The total of the Come-out roll when a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is thrown. The Point remains until a 7 is rolled or the Point is thrown again. A white puck
with the word "On" will be placed on the table to indicate the Point. If no Point exists, the puck will be blue and display the word "Off".
-
Come Point
-
A Come Point is very similar to the Point. It is established by placing a Come bet and throwing a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. Unlike the Point, however, there is no special puck to identify a Come Point. Instead, the chips from the Come bet are moved to a special location within the numbered box corresponding to roll.
Odds bet
-
Generic term for any of the four bets that pay True Odds, specifically the Pass Line Odds, Don't Pass Line Odds, Come Point Odds, and Don't Come Point Odds.
Taking Odds
-
Term for betting on the Pass Line Odds or Come Point Odds. Players that Take Odds are betting that the Point ( or Come Point ) will be thrown before a 7.
-
Laying Odds
-
Term for betting on the Don't Pass Line Odds or Don't Come Point Odds. Players that Lay Odds are betting that a 7 will be rolled prior to the Point ( or Come Point ).
-
Place Numbers
-
The numbers that can become a Point ( 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 ), on which Place Win, Place Lose, Buy, or Lay bets can be made.
-
True Odds
-
The mathematical odds of rolling any two-dice total versus rolling a 7. A True Odds bet has no House advantage, which makes it a very attractive wager. The four Odds bets ( Pass Line Odds, Don't Pass Line Odds, Come Point Odds, Don't Come Point Odds ) pay at True Odds. The Buy and Lay bets also pay True Odds but charge
an up-front commission for receiving the more favorable payouts.

-
Flat/Contract Bet
-
The Pass Line, Don't Pass Line, Come Point, or Don't Come Point bet that is required prior to placing an Odds bet. A Flat bet pays 1 to 1.
-
Max Odds
-
A ratio used to calculate the maximum wager that can be placed for an Odds bet ( Pass Line Odds, Don't Pass Line Odds, Come Point Odds, Don't Come Point Odds ). Common values for Max Odds include Double Odds ( 2x ), Full Double ( 2x for a Point of 4, 5, 9, 10 and 2.5x for 6 or 8 ), and Triple Odds ( 3x ).
Cantor Casino currently offers 3X Max Odds.
When Taking Odds, Max Odds applies to the Flat bet. When Laying Odds, Max Odds applies to the potential winnings. Since winnings for Lay Odds are based on the True Odds, the maximum Lay Odds bet is dependent on the Point.
Examples:
-
If the Max Odds is 3x, a £5 Pass Line bet could have a maximum Pass Line Odds bet of £15, regardless of the Point ( 3 x £5 = £15 ).
-
If the Max Odds is Full Double, the maximum Pass Line Odds bet would depend on the Point. A £6 Pass Line bet with a Point of 4 could have a maximum £12 Pass Line Odds bet ( 2 x £6 = £12 ). If the Point were 6 or 8, however, the maximum bet would be £15 ( 2.5 x £6 = £15 ).
-
If the Max Odds is 3x with a Point of 4, a £5 Don't Pass Line bet would be limited such that the winnings do not exceed £15 ( 3 x £5 = £15 ). A Don't Pass Line bet with a Point of 4 would pay 1 to 2 according to the True Odds, so in order to win £15, a £30 bet could be placed.
-
Working
-
Some bets may not be resolved when a round ends and thus remain on the table. Those bets that remain can be either Working or Not Working, depending on the type of bet. A Working bet can be won or lost on the Come-out roll.
-
Not Working
-
Bets that do not win or lose on a Come-out roll. Not Working bets will be indicated with a special chip containing a red "X" on a black field.
The following bets are Off on a Come-out roll:
- On
-
Another term for Working.
- Off
-
Another term for Not Working.
Placing bets
There are two principal types of wagers in Craps: single-roll and multiple-roll. Single-roll wagers either win or lose on the next throw of the dice. Proposition Bets, such as the Field, are single-roll wagers. Multiple-roll wagers remain on the table
until a specific number ( or numbers ) is rolled. Big 6 is an example of a multiple-roll wager in that it remains until a 6 or 7 is rolled.
-
Pass Line
-
This is one of the most popular bets and a good choice for beginners. A Pass Line bet wins if a 7 or 11 is thrown on the Come-out roll and loses on a 2, 3, or 12. Any other total on the Come-out roll ( e.g. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 ) becomes the
Point. In order to win a Pass Line bet after the Point is established, the Point must be rolled again before throwing a 7. Pass Line bets pay 1 to 1.
After the Point is established, a Pass Line bet can be increased, but not decreased nor removed.
Example:
A £1 Pass Line bet is placed. The Come-out roll totals 6. As this is neither an instant winning ( 7 or 11 ) nor losing ( 2, 3, or 12 ) value, it becomes the Point. The next roll is 11, which is neither the Point ( 6 ) nor 7, and play continues. The player subsequently throws a 6, which is the Point, winning £1 and ending the round.

Don't Pass Line
-
This bet is opposite to that of the Pass Line bet. A Don't Pass Line bet wins if the Come-out roll is a 2 or 3, loses on a 7 or 11, and ties on a 12. Any other total on the Come-out roll ( e.g. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 ) becomes the Point.
After the Point is established, a Don't Pass Line bet wins if a 7 is thrown before rolling the Point. Don't Pass Line bets pay 1 to 1.
A Don't Pass Line bet can only be placed on a Come-out roll. After the Point is established, a Don't Pass Line bet can be decreased or removed but not increased.
Examples:
A £1 Don't Pass Line bet is placed. The Come-out roll totals 6, which becomes the Point. The next roll is 12, which is neither the Point ( 6 ) nor 7. The following roll is 7, which results in a payout of £1 and ends the round.
A £1 Don't Pass Line bet is placed. The Come-out roll totals 12. This is considered a tie and the bet is returned.

Pass Line Odds
-
An addition to the Pass Line bet, placed after the Point is established, that pays True Odds. This bet wins if the Point is rolled and loses on a throw of 7. The maximum bet amount is determined by the Max Odds. If the Max Odds is
3X, for example, an Odds bet can be up to 3 times the Pass Line bet.
A Pass Line bet must exist in order to place this bet. The Pass Line Odds bet can be increased, decreased, or removed.

Don't Pass Line Odds
-
An addition to the Don't Pass Line bet, placed after the Point is established, that pays True Odds. This bet wins if a 7 is thrown prior to rolling the Point. The maximum bet is dependent on the Point such that the maximum payout does not exceed Max Odds times the Don't Pass Line wager.
To compute the maximum bet, multiply the True Odds of the Point by the expected winnings.
For example, if Max Odds is 3X, then the expected winnings for a £10 Odds bet is £30 ( £10 x 3 ). If the Point is a 4 or 10, then the True odds are 2 to 1, which means the maximum bet is £60 ( £30 * 2 ). If the Point is a 5 or 9, then the True odds are 3 to 2, which means the maximum bet is £45 ( £30 * 3 / 2 ). And finally,
if the point is a 6 or 8, then the True Odds are 6 to 5, resulting in a maximum bet of £36 ( £30 * 6 / 5 ).
The Don't Pass Line Odds bet can be increased, decreased, or removed.

Come
-
Available after the Point is established, this bet behaves similar to a Pass Line bet. Throwing a 7 or 11 on the next roll ( virtual Come-out ) wins, while throwing a 2, 3 or 12 loses. Any other total ( e.g. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 ) becomes the Come Point. The chips from the Come
bet are moved to the box with the corresponding Come Point number. The Come bet pays 1 to 1.
Once the Come Point is established, re-throwing it will win and rolling a 7 will lose.
A Come Point bet can be increased but not decreased nor removed. This bet is Working on a Come-out roll, meaning it can be won or lost.
